Bookish life update: BookTube, audio-books and blogging

Wrap up

Whats this? a wrap up/ life update??? The world must be ending or take it as a sign and hold on for dear life as these are rare around here!

Anyways, hi lovelies how have you all been?? I hit a few milestones and also started a few new bookish projects in the last month so thought it was about time I did a little update and shared it with you all!

BookTube Announcement!

My first big announcement they you may or may not already know about is that I started a BookTube channel!!! Its really fresh only two videos in but I am so freaking excited about it.

YT capture

Don’t get me wrong I love blogging and updating my bookstagram but I had been feeling a little bored lately and like my passion for all things bookish wasn’t as strong as it used to be. And then I thought what if I made a BookTube? and straight away I felt this new excitement the excitement and nerves of trying new things but also the excitement for learning new skills and meeting more people in the bookish community.

I have loved learning video editing skills and putting together my first few videos. I am so excited and am full of ideas for so many videos that I cant wait to put out into the world! If you have a BookTube or like to watch BookTube I hope you will join me on this new journey of mine! You can find my channel here. I look forward to hearing what you think! 🙂

Milestones!

This past month I also hit some new milestones on my bookstagram and here on my blog!

SO here on the blog I reached 300 subscribers which is absolutely crazy and just blows my mind that that many people want to read what this terrible speller and non grammatical person has to say! So thank you to each and everyone of you for putting up with each miss-spelled word and non-sentence it means the world to me! ❤

I also just came on today to realise I have reached 50 posts on this blog! 50 posts! what the??!! For someone who doesn’t stick with a lot of things I am so proud of myself for sticking with this (through a break here and there) and continuing to write about my passion for books, movies and everything fandom related! Let me know if there is anything you would like to see that I haven’t done yet or any books/movies you want to know my opinion on.

I recently also reached 1.5K on my bookstagram. which I just can not get used to like not at all! I love my bookstagram family and the community and all the friends I have made there. Those people are so special and just bring so much joy and goodness to the world! So if any of you from there are reading this, THANK YOU!! You all mean so much to me and I am thankful everyday I get to be part of the community. ❤

Title: The Order

Creator: Dennis Heaton a Netflix Original

Release: March 2019

divider 1If you are looking for a new series to binge watch and have it grip you with its claws and not let go. Then look no further The Order Netflix’s latest original series is it! Netflix categorises this show as TV horror with a synopsis of: Out to avenge his mother’s death, a college student pledges a secret order and lands in a war between werewolves and practitioners of dark magic.

That alone sounds pretty great right? Well let me tell you this show more then lives up to its description. I was hooked from episode one and the more I watched the more I wanted! I would personally categorise this show as a supernatural/paranormal horror as both themes are very prominent throughout the series. You like magic? Especially dark magic? That may or may not involve the occasional drop of blood or human sacrifice? This ones for you! You like werewolves? How about werewolves with a cause? And a completely unique turning process? Then go watch The Order now! This show even has college drama, romance and a good if not sometimes dark sense of humour. It really has something for everyone, but I especially recommend it to fellow lovers of the supernatural/ paranormal genres!

So, I think we have clarified that I love this show even if its just for the base themes mentioned above. But let’s delve a little deeper into why I am now ride or die with this series. Firstly the plot is great! Don’t worry no specific spoilers here! But I will say enough happens in each episode in order to keep you hooked. There are enough twists and turns and leading questions to make you want to stay up and find out what happens. Not to mention the series finale is one of the BEST I have watched in a long time! I did not see the ending coming and let’s just say it left tears in my eyes and my jaw on the floor! The characters and the development these characters go through are another thing that brings this show to a whole other level. We have characters with no morals and characters with strong morals, some of which change their ways, and some don’t. We have strong friendships developed, my favourite of which has to be between the werewolves, it’s just great to see their bond develop over time. My absolute favourite character is Lilith, she is such a strong fierce female and her character growth is probably the best throughout the series. In fact, this series is full of strong female characters some of which I love and some of which I hate. So, if you are all for girl power this one could be for you too!

I can’t go into too much else without completely spoiling major plot lines. Bust seriously go watch this show! Right now! I am serious, stop what you are doing and go watch it. This is a five star series for me 10 out of 10 DO recommend! This deserves so much more hype! I can not wait for season 2 and I can not wait to hear what you all think too!Let's Chat!

Have you seen this one yet? what did you think? What are some of your Netflix recommendations? Let me know in the comments below! Until next time, happy watching and reading!

November wrap up

Wrap up

Reading:

This month was a very slow reading month for me! I have been slumping hard and have been lacking the motivation to read, I hope it changes soon! 😦 As I read a dismal 1.5 books this month!

  • It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover. This is an adult contemporary  book. This book was very emotional and sparked my discussion about trigger warnings. My rating is 4/5.
  • Lisette’s pairs Notebook by Catherine Bateson. This is a YA contemporary, I am currently only about half way through. I actually won this book as a part of a prize pack from Allen and Unwin Australia. It is pretty cutesie so far about a 3/5.

Watching:

So my reading may have been dismal this month but thanks to that I had a really good watching month. I managed to watch quite a few different things and I really enjoyed them all! 🙂

Movies:

  • The Christmas Chronicles. Yes I have started watching Christmas movies already. And you know what? I loved this one! A solid 5/5.

TV:

  • Charmed (original), most of season 1.
  • Riverdale, season 2 and season 3 so far.
  • The chilling adventures of Sabrina , some of season 1.
  • The Bold type, season 1 & 2.
  • The Last ship, season 1 and 2.

Blog:

I am pretty pleased with what I managed to get out on the blog during November. Mostly because of my discussion post. I don’t know why but I don’t come up with discussion posts easily and sometimes when I do I think maybe no one else will find them interesting. But I was really happy with how this one turned out and the discussion it started!

I am still busy planning my wedding! We are less than 3 months out now so everything is getting down to the fine details and I am very excited and anxious for everything to go right.  We finally sent out the invitations and now I am just stressfully running around trying to make sure I don’t forget anything!  Work has also been pretty stressful lately as we have been low on staff. • Reach out/ get involved with more publishers/ companies I love. (not sure how realistic or how I will go about this! But we shall see!) – I have recently been given some amazing advice and support from some amazing bookstagram friends in the whole working with publishers and putting yourself out there thing. So I am excited to try to put it into action and see where it goes!
  • Comment more on other blogs/ bookstagram & interact more in general. – I have definitely worked really hard on this one! So goal completed but it is something I intend to keep up!

I am still busy planning my wedding! We are down to 3 months out now so everything is getting down to the fine details and I am very excited and anxious for everything to go right. We got to do a cake tasting a few weeks back and that has been one of my favourite things! It tasted so good and I can’t wait to see the finished product! I can’t wait to see how everything all turns out and to marry the man of my dreams. Anyways other than that and reading, blogging, bookstagram and screen time it is pretty much work, home, sleep and repeat haha.

Review: Sea Breeze Academy by Bryant A. Loney

thumbnail_Sea Breeze AcademyTitle: Sea Breeze Academy

Author: Bryant A. Loney

Genre: YA Contemporary/ mystery

Publisher: Verona Booksellers

Publication date: June 2018

Rating: 2/5

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A group of boarding school teens in season five of a Cali-based sitcom begin to realize they are in a TV show.

A missing student, or maybe several.
Embedded marketing, sushi, token friends, and cacti.
The sound of the Pacific waves in the background.
Smothering darkness. The threat of Alaska.
Another perfect, perfect day.
Happiness lives here.

Brooklyn, Matthew, and the gang are ready to rock their last few weeks of junior year at their elite boarding school on the California coast. But something is amiss. In the fifth and potentially last season of this award-winning television series, the struggle between truth and network censorship just might destroy their bond once and for all. Can they survive another season of love, mystery, and adolescent angst on the sunny West Coast? Will life ever be normal again?

Experimental and subversive, Sea Breeze Academy is a smart love letter to the Nickelodeon and Disney Channel sitcoms you grew up with. Are you ready?

Thank you to Verona book sellers for providing me with an e-copy of this book along with promotional pictures in exchange for my honest review. Review2

I do not even know where to start with this review. I apologize in advance if this review does not flow or is confusing. But my brain is just a little confused by this book right now.

So, this book was pitched to me and is depicted in the synopsis has a love letter and or spoof of the teen TV shows we all know and probably loved at some point growing up. This and the stunning cover were enough to pique my interest! The first couple of chapters seemed to be exactly what I was expecting and reminded me of a mix of shows like Hanna Montanan and The OC. The book being written in mostly script format also helped set this feeling and scene up. E.g. I felt like I was reading the TV show instead of watching it. Even though the script format took a little getting used to, it also made it possible to read this book very quickly! Which was a great change for a usually slow reader like me. There was drama, romance, elite California school, fashion…all that juicy teen stuff. I was beginning to think this was going to be a light, cheesy read, making fun of the TV shows I grew up with.

thumbnail_Sea Breeze Kids

Boy was I wrong! After the first few chapters things took a really weird turn! At first, I thought it was just the “something is amiss” part of the synopsis starting to play out. And I guess in a way it was? However, it was done in such a way that for the majority of the book I was sat thinking to myself what is going on??!! So, instead of really enjoying the story I was stuck wondering what the premises of the story actually was. Was I not just reading a TV Show occurring? Was it more a Spoof of reality shows like The Hills and trying to hint they are scripted? Or was it supposed to be some hidden camera thing like Big Brother? Or were the characters of the TV show becoming self-aware? I really could not work it out and I am still not 100% sure! This made me struggle to get through most of the story and I was frustrated that I couldn’t work out what was going on.

Things also seemed to take on a much more serious note in the second half and end of the book. With loads of life lessons and messages being woven into the story. About the pressure of trying to be perfect and losing oneself in the attempt of trying to please everyone. Depression, anxiety and eating disorders are all mentioned. Media propagation, political correctness and in your face advertising are all part of the story as well. And While I know and understand that these lessons and topics etc are important and should be represent in YA fiction. I just thought it was too much all at once. And with the confusing nature of the trajectory of the plot line I just don’t think it had the desired effect.

The ending of the book was one of the most confusing aspects for me. I just feel like there was no real resolution. I have no clue what happened to one of the MC’s and what was going to happen to the others. Half of the character interactions just made no sense to me! I just was left feeling like “what? That is what all the strangeness was building to? I don’t get it!!”

In conclusion although I was hoping to really like this book in the end it just left me a confused mess. I love the cover and the uniqueness of the script format. I even really enjoyed the first few “chapters’. However, I thought majority of the story was simply confusing. Too many life lessons/ concepts were trying to be displayed and it all seemed to amount to nothing. Or at least I myself did not really feel that wow it all makes sense now moment. Therefore, I have given this book 2/5 stars. Let's Chat!Have you read this book? Have you ever read a book in script format and did you enjoy it? What was your favourite teen TV show? The Netflix Book Tag

Hello again beautiful people! What have we all been up to? What are you reading watching? Today I bring you another tag. This one however speaks to my soul!! As next to reading my favourite hobby is watching TV/Movies hence the blog. So this is the Netflix book tag. I am not sure of the original creator but I was tagged by Lexie at Reading in the wings. So let’s grab some popcorn and some cozy blankets and get started! divider 1

Recently Watched: The last book you finished reading.

Well it’s only a novella not a full book but A court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas. You can see my review here if you’re interested. 🙂

Image result for acofas cover

Top Picks: A book that has been recommended to you based on books you have previously read.

Being a big fantasy reader and YA reader many of the books I read are recommended in the way they are grouped together at the book store. Or because I follow a lot of readers who also read fantasy if I see them talking about a book and they have liked books I have loved then I usually will give it a go. So I can’t really pick just one!

Recently Added: The last book you bought.

Image result for red rising cover
2 I have read:
  • The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
  • Nevernight By Jay Kristoff

2 I am yet to read:

  • Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. (I do mean to read this I know it’s going to be great I just am not ready to let go of those characters yet).
  • Lord Of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. I own this, it just took me so long to get through Lady Midnight. I am just not sure if I want to continue.

Dramas: A character who is a drama queen/king.

This tag is quickly revealing how much I am Sarah J Maas trash. But if Rhysand isn’t the biggest drama queen you have ever met than you must be yet to meet him! That boy’s love for dramatic entrances/ reveals alone is enough to give him the crown! hahaha.

ACOMAF

Animated: A book with cartoons on the cover.

I don’t really own any books with what I would call cartoons on the cover. But I guess the Harry Potter books I own kind of do? They are illustrated at least. Does that count?

Watch it Again: A book or series that you want to re-read.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I am a huge re-reader I love to reread my favourites all the time! And Love to re-read just before a new instalment in a series comes out. I have had the urge recently to reread the Throne of glass series by Sarah J Maas. However I want to wait till closer to the release of the final book even though I am yet to read Assassin’s Blade or Tower of Dawn.

sjm

Documentaries: A non-fiction book you’d recommend to everyone.

I am not going to lie I very rarely read non-fiction books. I mostly read to escape or relax so non-fiction isn’t really my thing. I will say I did really enjoy Lauren Graham’s book: From Gilmore girls to Gilmore girls talking as fast as I can.

Action Adventure: An action packed book.

Despite most fantasy books being packed full of some kind of action. The first book that came to mind for this is definitely Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. The fights, the scheming, the plotting, the violence. Just everything about the dregs LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

SOC

New Releases: A book that just came out, or will be coming out soon, that you can’t wait to read.

My mind is almost completely blank right now on new releases that are coming out! I know of some later this year into early next year that I am very excited for. But have been so busy lately I haven’t really kept track of ones coming out soon! I will say I am excited for One small thing by Erin Watt. It comes out June 18th. As although I read mostly fantasy I absolutely loved When its real and read it in almost one siting! And this sounds like another All the feels young love story. ❤divider 1

I Tag: Book Beach Bunny / Howling Libraries / Shelfish For Books / Windowsill Books

Life:

There really haven’t been any big life events this month. I love that I feel more passionate again about my hobbies, reading, blogging, bookstagram. The only major thing that is happening at the moment is I am busy planning my wedding! We are down to about 9 months out now so everything has finally started moving and we have a solid vision. We met with our wedding planner the other weekend she is so awesome and helps me organise everything and really focus on what we want. Which for someone who is prone to stressing as much as me is such a good thing. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out and to marry the man of my dreams. Anyways other than that it is pretty much work, home, sleep and repeat haha.

Goals for May:

I think since I just got back into all this I am going to try to keep these relatively simple. They are a mix between blogging, reading and life goals.

  • Read at least 4 books.
  • Post a blog at least 1-2 times a week.
  • Do/ plan more review posts.
  • Comment more on other blogs/ bookstagrams & interact more in general.
  • Set in stone more stuff for the wedding!
  • Try to stress less and relax more.

Hello again ….. Let’s give this another go.

Well hello there friends, it’s been a while. I guess I should start by apologizing/ explaining my year long hiatus. I started this blog towards the start of last year along with my bookstagram @paperbackandflickchick in the hopes of sharing and expressing my love of all things books, movies and TV shows. For a while I had the time and passion to put into and create for both of these hobbies for myself. Unfortunately my life got pretty hectic and I went through what I feel was tremendous change and growth as a person. I got engaged, went through my last semester of university wondering if I was going to graduate and what I was going to do with my adult life. I passed my exams graduated from uni and got my first full time job in my chosen field. My partner and I brought our first home together and although I made some new friends I lost many along the way.

I guess through all of this I put my hobbies, passion and creativity on the back burner until I no longer felt the urge to create for either of these media and eventually stopped all together. So thank you to those of you who stuck around through my silence and inactivity. It really does mean a lot. To any new followers, welcome! Thank you for taking the time to look into my blog and chucking me a follow despite the lack of activity. You have come at a good time, because guess what? I’m back baby and I have found my passion for this again and I hope things are about to get a lot more active and interesting around here.

I have been in my new job now for over half a year and settled into my house for a couple of months now. A few months ago I found myself feeling bored and restless with no creative outlet. Around about this time I decided to start up my bookstagram again and have posted every day for a couple of months straight now. It is one of the greatest decisions I have made recently. I absolutely love it! I have come across so many great new inspirational and amazing accounts. And through this I have started to meet some truly awesome like-minded people. These past couple of weeks I have felt a pull towards blogging and wanting to be able to write more about the things I am reading and watching, loving and hating at the moment. So I have decided to listen to what my intuition and soul are telling me and to start writing and creating more content for here. Basically inflicting you unsuspecting people with my thought opinions and reviews.

My goals for this blog are to, like bookstagram find like-minded people creating great content and improve my own skills in this thing called blogging. Remember I have very little experience and am basically a beginner with so much to learn. My writing style is very in the moment, open honest and full of emotion. I don’t really plan what I am going to write. I get an idea in my head or get the urge to write about a particular book or movie and just kind of let the words spill out onto the page. At least this way you can always count on the fact that my reviews are 100% my own personal honest views and opinions. I plan to post here at least a couple of times per month and whenever the creative urge demands it. Once again thank you for sticking around I hope you enjoy this journey and experience as much as I do. Speak to you again soon.

ONCE UPON A TIME: My thoughts so far

once-upon-a-time

Title: Once upon a time

Creators: Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis

Spoiler Alert: Just a warning that there is very likely to be spoilers in this post due to the fact that I am just so excited and angry about certain things I can not express myself without them. So if you’re like me and hate spoilers do not read this post, yet, if you haven’t seen seasons 1-3.

So I know that this show has been around for a while now but for a number of reasons I had just never made the decision to watch it until recently. However now I wish I would have watched it much sooner! This show Oh my gosh! Let me tell you I am now a big fan and absolutely love everything this show brings to television.

For those of you that don’t know Once Upon a Time is a show that fits into the genres of fantasy, action and romance. The show is mostly set in a small town called Storybrooke as well as the enchanted forest. The show is Centered around Emma Swan: “the product of true love” and in this case the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. In what is in my opinion creative genius that must take weeks of planning and creating this show portrays old school fairytales, nursery stories and Disney tales in a modern day setting and manages to intertwine them all together.

The fact that the show is centered around magic and fairytales is just one of the reasons I love this show! I also love the elaborate out of this world costumes, the plot twists, the great acting (In terms of TV shows) and many of the characters (others I just love to hate). I am going to take this moment to share with you guys some of my favorite characters from the show and I can’t start with any other one than Hook. Where do I even start? Killian Jones (Hook) is a sexy beast, pirate, funny, ladies man with a bigger heart than you would first think. Not to mention the way he falls for Emma and has her back is the best thing and had me swooning. Not to mention when him and Emma actually finally get together I was literally squealing like a school girl! I mean seriously it took Emma long enough! Which brings me to my second favorite: Emma Swan, although she frustrates me immensely sometimes, her large heart, bravery and wit by far make up for it and you can’t help but love her character. Lastly one that was a bit unexpected for me and I am still not 100% sure why I like him so much myself is Rumplestiltskin. I mean yes he has done horrible things and still continues to do so, but he has also done heartwarmingly great things for the people he loves, and I think it might mostly be the fact that Robert Carlyle is just brilliant in the role I mean seriously he is great! There are so many other great characters and things about this show but if I sat here and wrote about them all this would be the longest post in history and not to mention I don’t want to spoil everything, just in case you ignored my spoiler warning.

As I think I’ve made very clear, I love this show and am pretty much addicted. Because of this however I am left quite angry. Why you ask? Well I had finished season three which is when Emma and Hook finally get together (Squeal!!), and so obviously wanted to go straight on to season four to see how their relationship grows as well as how the rest of the plot carries on. So I went and looked online for places where I could buy season four on DVD near my home only to discover that it was not available in Australia. Ok no big deal, no need to freak out yet, surely the release date is soon right?! So I go on to look that up only to discover that it isn’t anytime soon and that it is only currently airing on Australian TV now! So now you are probably thinking why don’t you just watch it now then, as it airs?  Which was exactly my thought process at the time, however they are already about halfway through the season and therefore there is no way for me to watch the episodes I have missed without using illegal means (which I know some people are ok with but I don’t like doing especially to shows I love). So now I am left to wait for the DVD to be released in Australia so I can catch up on my addiction. I really hope the wait goes quick so I can stop being sulky and frustrated. Not to mention I miss Hook already!!

Have you guys had the pleasure of watching this show? Who are your favorite characters? Do you have to deal with the delayed airing to? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you!
