November wrap up

Wrap up

Reading:

This month was a very slow reading month for me! I have been slumping hard and have been lacking the motivation to read, I hope it changes soon! ūüė¶ As I read a dismal 1.5 books this month!

  • It Ends with Us¬†by Colleen Hoover. This is an adult contemporary¬† book. This book was very emotional and sparked my discussion about trigger warnings. My rating is 4/5.
  • Lisette’s pairs Notebook by Catherine Bateson. This is a YA contemporary, I am currently only about half way through. I actually won this book as a part of a prize pack from Allen and Unwin Australia. It is pretty cutesie so far about a 3/5.

Blog:

I am pretty pleased with what I managed to get out on the blog during November. Mostly because of my discussion post. I don’t know why but I don’t come up with discussion posts easily and sometimes when I do I think maybe no one else will find them interesting. But I was really happy with how this one turned out and the discussion it started!

Life:

I am still busy planning my wedding! We are down to 3 months out now so everything is getting down to the fine details and I am very excited and anxious for everything to go right. We got to do a cake tasting a few weeks back and that has been one of my favourite things! It tasted so good and I can’t wait to see the finished product! I can’t wait to see how everything all turns out and to marry the man of my dreams. Anyways other than that and reading, blogging, bookstagram and screen time it is pretty much work, home, sleep and repeat haha.

Life:

There really haven’t been any big life events this month. I love that I feel more passionate again about my hobbies, reading, blogging, bookstagram. The only major thing that is happening at the moment is I am busy planning my wedding! We are down to about 9 months out now so everything has finally started moving and we have a solid vision. We met with our wedding planner the other weekend she is so awesome and helps me organise everything and really focus on what we want. Which for someone who is prone to stressing as much as me is such a good thing. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out and to marry the man of my dreams. Anyways other than that it is pretty much work, home, sleep and repeat haha.

Movie Review: A quiet place

quiet_place_ver3Movie: A quiet Place

Director: John Krasinski

Studio: Paramount Pictures

Release date:  April 6th 2018

Genre: Drama, horror, suspense

Rating: 5/5

Disclaimer: I endeavour to make this review spoiler free so as not to be a shit person. However as always my version of a spoiler may not be the same as your definition of a spoiler. I will not mention any plot lines, twists, turns or conclusions. This review however will contain a LOT of feelings and my personal honest opinions. All movie posters are owned by the Studio/director.Review2

Just a quick synopsis/ overview. A quiet place is about a family living in a post-apocalyptic / dystopian future. Where any noise they make can cause them to be hunted. The movie follows their story of trying to grow, love and most importantly survive.

Where do I even start with this movie!! OMG I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago now and I still get so worked up every time I think about it. I will start by saying this is probably the best movie I have seen in a long time! If a movie was ever an intense as all hell emotional roller-coaster than this is it. I bet your thinking really? How many emotions can a horror type movie make you feel? Well my friends here’s a not so short list of emotions/ reactions I had during this movie:

  • Laughed
  • Gasped/ screamed
  • Trouble breathing
  • Anger
  • Sadness
  • Crying
  • Hands sweating
  • Increased heart rate

And that’s not even the extensive descriptive list! Now this makes me sound like an emotional wreck and possibly just someone not cut out for Horror movies. Why some of that may be true. As in I generally hate horror/ scary movies. So much so that I try to avoid them at all costs. This is not your average horror movie. Yes there are a few jump scares but the entire movie does not revolve or rely on this gimmick. The ones they use are all well placed and add to the story. But I would say overall this movie should be classified as a VERY intense/ suspenseful DRAMA!!

Seriously though! For a movie with such few words I was amazed at how much it made me feel and how sucked into it I got. I really have to applaud Emily Blunt, John Krasinski and the other main actors/ actresses for an outstanding job. To be able to convey such emotion and feeling with very little spoken dialogue is absolutely amazing to me.

I think the fact that there was such little spoken dialogue and noise in the movie played a big role in sucking in the audience and making them feel like they too were on the journey with this family. I have never been in such a quiet movie theatre in my life. I personally felt like every little noise was dangerous. That I couldn’t so much as touch my chocolate bar because it would make too much damn noise! If it wasn’t suspenseful enough feeling drawn in like I was part of the family and now damned to a life of needing to be silent. The fact that said family in my opinion made not one but multiple dumb ass stupid decisions took the suspense/intensity dial and turned it all the way up to the bloody max! They had me thinking why? Why??!! No, no! NO!!! You idiots! Despite these stupid decisions this movie managed to convey perfectly what it is like to love your family. What it’s like to put them first and do absolutely anything for them.

I consider everything I have mentioned so far about this movie to be positives. What Tamika? Even though you baled your eyes out and felt like any moment you might not be able to take the intensity anymore? Yes concerned reader even then. Because all of that added up to make one hell of a cinematic experience. I think if I had to find a negative the only one in this movie for me would be the fact that time sometimes seemed to move weirdly or be a bit disjointed. As in something that should take a long time seemed to take a matter of seconds and something that should have been pretty quick seemed to take forever!

Overall this movie was bloody fantastic. I left the movie theatre having felt so many emotions and being taken on such a ride that my hands were shaking uncontrollably. I have never had a reaction like that to a movie before in my life. Although this movie is definitely not for the weak hearted I cannot recommend it enough!¬†Krasinski and Co have done an absolutely fantastic job. If you haven’t seen this movie yet do so like yesterday! I doubt you will regret it. I probably have failed to put into words exactly what this movie did to me and just how good it was but personally I believe it more than deserves of a 5/5 rating!¬†Let's Chat!

Hello again ‚Ķ.. Let‚Äôs give this another go.

Well hello there friends, it’s been a while. I guess I should start by apologizing/ explaining my year long hiatus. I started this blog towards the start of last year along with my bookstagram @paperbackandflickchick in the hopes of sharing and expressing my love of all things books, movies and TV shows. For a while I had the time and passion to put into and create for both of these hobbies for myself. Unfortunately my life got pretty hectic and I went through what I feel was tremendous change and growth as a person. I got engaged, went through my last semester of university wondering if I was going to graduate and what I was going to do with my adult life. I passed my exams graduated from uni and got my first full time job in my chosen field. My partner and I brought our first home together and although I made some new friends I lost many along the way.

I guess through all of this I put my hobbies, passion and creativity on the back burner until I no longer felt the urge to create for either of these media and eventually stopped all together. So thank you to those of you who stuck around through my silence and inactivity. It really does mean a lot. To any new followers, welcome! Thank you for taking the time to look into my blog and chucking me a follow despite the lack of activity. You have come at a good time, because guess what? I’m back baby and I have found my passion for this again and I hope things are about to get a lot more active and interesting around here.

I have been in my new job now for over half a year and settled into my house for a couple of months now. A few months ago I found myself feeling bored and restless with no creative outlet. Around about this time I decided to start up my bookstagram again and have posted every day for a couple of months straight now. It is one of the greatest decisions I have made recently. I absolutely love it! I have come across so many great new inspirational and amazing accounts. And through this I have started to meet some truly awesome like-minded people. These past couple of weeks I have felt a pull towards blogging and wanting to be able to write more about the things I am reading and watching, loving and hating at the moment. So I have decided to listen to what my intuition and soul are telling me and to start writing and creating more content for here. Basically inflicting you unsuspecting people with my thought opinions and reviews.

My goals for this blog are to, like bookstagram find like-minded people creating great content and improve my own skills in this thing called blogging. Remember I have very little experience and am basically a beginner with so much to learn. My writing style is very in the moment, open honest and full of emotion. I don’t really plan what I am going to write. I get an idea in my head or get the urge to write about a particular book or movie and just kind of let the words spill out onto the page. At least this way you can always count on the fact that my reviews are 100% my own personal honest views and opinions. I plan to post here at least a couple of times per month and whenever the creative urge demands it. Once again thank you for sticking around I hope you enjoy this journey and experience as much as I do. Speak to you again soon.

Batman v Superman: Half hit half miss

batman-vs-superman2

Title: Batman v Superman: Dawn of justice

Director: Zack Snyder

Writers: Chris Terrio et al.

Genre: Action/superhero

My review: Now I am always one of the first to admit that I love a good superhero movie, however as the title suggests the first half of this instalment was more than a let down. The switches¬†between the worlds of Superman and Batman just did not mesh as much as one would like and left me feeling like I was trying to follow two completely¬†separate movies. The numerous flash backs/ dream sequences did not help. Making the plot line hard to follow and often confusing.¬†Lastly having a completely new actor (Ben Affleck)¬†coming in to play such an iconic role without his own solo movie first didn’t help the first half of this movie.

On a more positive note the second half of the movie improved my overall opinion dramatically. From the crazy, dramatic and over the top battle scenes to the beginnings of the Justice League. This part of the movie had me feeling like I was finally seeing what I came to see. The insanely awesome acting of Jesse Eisenberg and Gal Gadot was also a great highlight. Eisenberg played the psychotic evil genius that is Lex Luthor perfectly and Gadot was total badass beauty as Wonder Woman. All this accompanied with the dramatic and suspenseful ending has me waiting for the next instalment in this franchise.

Conclusion: Although the first half of the movie really was a let down, the second half really makes up for it. If you’re a fan of superhero movies and great battle scenes then I would give this one¬†a go. If however you’re not really into that, find plots hard to follow and cant sit still for near on 2.5hours, then maybe give this one a miss or wait for the DVD.
