Author: Sarah J Maas

Genre: YA fantasy

Publisher: Bloomsbury

Publication date: March 2014

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Celaena Sardothien owes her reputation to Arobynn Hamel. He gave her a home at the Assassins’ Guild and taught her the skills she needed to survive.

Arobynn’s enemies stretch far and wide – from Adarlan’s rooftops and its filthy dens, to remote islands and hostile deserts. Celaena is duty-bound to hunt them down. But behind her assignments lies a dark truth that will seal her fate – and cut her heart in two forever…

Explore the dark underworld of this kick-ass heroine and find out how the legend begins in the five page-turning prequel novellas to the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series.Review2

I finally picked up this book for the first time a couple of weeks ago to read as part of my overall ToG reread in anticipation of the KoA release. I can not believe it took me so long to pick this book up! This collection of novellas about Celaena’s past, filled in so many gaps in her back story that I didn’t even know I was missing! I should mention that although this is my first read of this particular book, I have read all of the other books in the series at least once (excluding Tower of Dawn).  This collection of stories made me feel every emotion under the sun! Just as Celaena did as she experienced the events that unfold.

This book was an adventure and a half just like you would expect. Full of swagger, killing, betrayal, friendships, feelings, romance and everything in between. I think the writing style of these novellas is actually slightly better than the first few books in the series, expected given a writer’s style will develop and grow the more they write (this was published after ToG and CoM). I think this writing is neater and more descriptive and even more emotive. However, I may find scene’s in later books more emotive now that I am more aware of the backstory.

Now that I have yelled at you about my feelings on the collection overall. I am going to try to list my opinions on each of the novellas without rambling too much! haha who am I kidding? Here comes more of me yelling at you about my feelings!

The Assassin and the pirate lord

  • Classic swaggering, angry Celaena but who can’t help but fight for those worse off. I love this side of her.
  • So, this is the infamous Sam Cortland. I didn’t think I would like him this much from the get go. But he is just one of those people you can not help but like.
  • why does Rolfe hate Celaena so? OH!!! That will do it! Although well deserved!

The Assassin and the healer

  • I didn’t know it was possible to hate Arobynn Hamel more!
  • So, this is the Yrene Towers I have heard about but was yet to read about. By the end of this Novella I grew to like her and hope big things come from her later.
  • Overall my least liked Novella. Somewhat slow paced. I don’t like seeing Celaena down and worried or unsure of herself. But likely contains important info for ToD and KoA.

The Assassin and the desert

  • Loved seeing yet another part of this world.
  • Loved learning more about Ansel and her back story with Celaena.
  • Great to see one of the reasons Celaena is so good and seeing her with another teacher.
  • But that ending! why!

The Assassin and the underworld

  • Did I mention I hate Arobynn?!
  • Love seeing the planning behind Celaena’s missions.
  • Aw Sam!!
  • Hey there sapphire eye’s! Don’t think I didn’t notice you!

The Assassin and the empire

  • Celaena’s apartment, romantic cuteness
  • I HATE AROBYNN HAMEL!!!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!
  • I will never read the words I am Celaena Sardothien, and I will not be afraid in the same way ever again!
  • I am broken there is nothing left. Someone send help!!!

In conclusion this book gave me way more than I expected. I now feel that the rest of the series will make even more sense and more of an impact on me having read these novellas. Overall, I thought the book was well written and took me on an emotive adventure! all of this is why I have given The Assassins Blade a rating of 4.5/5. That .5 was taken off because this is not my favourite book of the series and because I am still trying to put back together my heart after Maas shattered it into a million and one pieces!Let's Chat!

Have you read this book? What did you think of it? Did you read this before or after reading the other books in the series and how do you think this effected your reading experience? Until next time, happy watching and reading!

Book Tag: 20 Questions

Hi there blogging world! Today I have another tag for you all! I was tagged by the lovely girls (Ash & Lo) at Windowsill books to do the 20 questions books tag. The original creator of this tag was not mentioned so if you know, please let me know!

So this tag works basically like the 20 questions game I am sure we have all played at some point. But this is the bookish version! So without further ado here are my answers:

HOW MANY BOOKS IS TOO MANY BOOKS IN A SERIES?

For me this depends on how much I like said world and characters. If I love something I can’t get enough of it and I want to spend as much time as possible with that world and characters! However I do own a book series that is about 15 books long and no matter how much I love the story I have not been able to finish it yet. So maybe anything longer than 8 books would be too long for me.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CLIFFHANGERS?

I have a love hate relationship with them. I think they are great at making you feel all the feels and propelling the story onwards. But if I don’t have the next book available the wait to see if my babies are ok is torture!

HARDBACK OR PAPERBACK?

Although hardbacks look better. They are way more expensive and actually harder to get in Australia. I also think they are more cumbersome to read. So paperback all the way (I mean have you seen my blog name? haha).

FAVOURITE BOOK?

I can not choose and you will not make me!! But seriously how do people actually choose just one?!

LEAST FAVOURITE BOOK?

This one is also really hard as most of the books I own I really enjoyed at some point in my life. So I just picked the one on my shelf that I have read and remember the least about!  The Summoning by Kelly Armstrong, something about kids with powers? Bringing the dead to life? I do remember enjoying it when I read it I just can’t remember much about it and have no desire to reread it soon. :/

LOVE TRIANGLES, YES OR NO?

Mainly yes. If they are done well. Although I am not going to lie I do get sucked into them picking a team and hoping to hell that the other ‘love’ interest just leaves already! 😉

THE MOST RECENT BOOK YOU JUST COULDN’T FINISH?

I very rarely DNF books. So I don’t think I have had a book I couldn’t finish recently. 🙂

A BOOK YOU’RE CURRENTLY READING?

I am still actually finishing up my re-read of ACOWAR as I have been in a bit of a slump. I have no idea what to read next! 😦

LAST BOOK YOU RECOMMENDED TO SOMEONE?

I can’t remember! I know I have said that The Cruel prince by Holly Black was great a number of times recently! And I am always telling people to give ACOTAR a go.

OLDEST BOOK YOU’VE READ? *PUBLICATION DATE*

Probably The great Gatsby or the Bible although I have not actually ever finished either cover to cover. I do intend to one day finish Gatsby though!

NEWEST BOOK YOU’VE READ? *PUBLICATION DATE*

I don’t have the money for new books at the moment so I think the most recent one I purchased and finished was The Cruel Prince by Holly Black.

FAVOURITE AUTHOR?

I love so many Authors for so many different reasons! But two of my favourites who are pretty much auto buy authors for me are Sarah J Maas and Jay Kristoff. ❤

BUYING BOOKS OR BORROWING BOOKS?

Buying!! When I have money to do so! That way they are mine, part of my collection and if I don’t want to I don’t ever have to give them back! Plus some borrowing books are just gross like where has that book been?!

A BOOK YOU DISLIKE THAT EVERYONE ELSE SEEM TO LOVE?

Not that I necessarily disliked it, like I did enjoy most of it just nowhere near as much as the rest of Cassie’s books. But Lady Midnight. Please don’t hate me! It just took me 3 shots to finish and although I enjoyed the ending I still haven’t picked up the next book.

BOOKMARKS OR DOG-EARS?

Bookmarks 110% of the time! I don’t like to damage my books in any way. Plus bookmarks are just so pretty! I will only dog ear magazines and books that are already damaged beyond repair.

A BOOK YOU CAN ALWAYS REREAD?

Any book I loved/ liked? I am a big re-reader! New book in a series coming out? Reread! No money for new books? Reread! Want to feel all the nostalgic emotions? Reread! In a slump? Reread!

CAN YOU READ WHILE HEARING MUSIC?

No, if I notice that it’s on while I am reading it’s like my brain short circuits and can’t do anything else but hear the words of the song!

ONE POV OR MULTIPLE POV’S?

I enjoy both! One is good if you love that main character but if you do not multiple is good to get away from them.

DO YOU READ A BOOK IN ONE SITTING OR OVER MULTIPLE DAYS?

I am compared to what seems like most people in the book community a pretty slow reader. So I can almost never finish a book in one sitting. But there has been times where I have done basically nothing but read for days to get through a book as I can’t put it down!

A BOOK YOU’VE READ BECAUSE OF THE COVER?

The amount of cover buys I have had over the years is astounding! Off the top of my head the only one I can think of right now is The raven boys. I brought originally because of the cover! They are just stunning though so can you blame me?! ❤

Book Shelf tour

Hello everyone so today I thought I would do another fun little post instead of a review. I have seen many of these around book blogs, booktube and bookstagram but Michaela from Journey into books is the most recent one I have seen. I thought it was cool to see an insight into her book world and decided to let you all have a little look into mine.

Before I begin apologies for the quality of some of the picture it was a mostly cloudy, & rainy day when I took them. 😦 Great reading weather but unfortunately not great for pictures!

Full room view

full room

This is my book room, library, reading spot and study. I love it and it was a must for me when I finally got my own house.

Shelf 1: Sarah J Maas

SJM

This is one of my favourite shelves in my room. I think it’s so pretty and it hosts possibly my favourite books! It does however annoy me that ACOWAR is not the matching paperback. But I just had to have this edition and one day hope to own them all in both paperback and hardback! As for the TOG series I am yet to read Assassins blade or TOD!  This also features my Uni graduation teddy from my Nana. My favourite Disney princess gifted to me by my fiance and my read and wonder magnetic bookmarks. Just look at my little inner circle and Mia and Tric 🙂

Shelf 2: Casandra Clare & Jay Kristoff

cassie claire

Underneath my Maas shelf is my Cassie Clare and Mr. Kristoff shelf. What’s that? Does the fact that the first three Mortal instruments books aren’t the same size as the others bother you? Yes! Yes it bloody does why do they do this? I will note that I also own the last TMI book as an e-book. This shelf also holds my Nevernight themed candle and lip balm. Bonus content there are actually 3 books on this shelf that I have not got around to reading yet!

Shelf 3: Mead, Shannon & Stiefvater

mead

Next on this bookcase is this shelf. Mead is one of the first authors I ever fell in love with and VA is one of my first loved fandoms. This shelf also contains The Bone Season series, where different length books strike again! 😦  As well as my Raven cycle books. The decor for this shelf is my TOG Dorian and Manon inspired candles and my Nevernight Mia print.

Shelf 4: The Morganville Vampires & Random

m vampires

The Morganville vampires by Rachel Cain is the longest series I own and contains one of the only signed books I own. As you can also see I have a few books from different series here also that I have mostly read but never continued with for one reason or another. Here I also have a Loki Print ❤ and my TOG Rowan inspired candle.

Printer shelf

printer

As this room doubles as a study my printer is here to. This also features some of my bookmarks and my wind mill collection 🙂

Cube 1

top 4

My first cube shelf is mostly a space for the many books surely to come! However currently it holds my Harley print ❤ some science themed decor. And a mixture of random series and standalone books. One of these is another signed one of mine!

Cube 2

bottom 4

My second cube contains most of my newer purchases and or gifted books as well as again some older random parts of series and standalone’s. It also contains most of my contemporary reads.

Shelf 5: Twilight & dystopian/random

twilight

Confession time, the Twilight series was what got me into/ addicted to reading. Before these, sixteen year old me hated reading, didn’t understand how people could do it for fun or read something that big! hahaha omg thank goodness I came to my senses!

Shelf 6: Mostly Adult fiction/erotica & some paranormal

grey

Can I just say that I love that this whole shelf nearly consists of books of all the same height. How aesthetically pleasing is that! Also Blood rights is a series I found very interesting and creative but hear very little about!

Shelf 7: Harry Potter & random

HP

Yes my harry Potter series is miss matched, I know but my Nana brought the hardbacks for me back when they were released before I even fell in love with reading hence why one is missing a dust jacket. My amazing Slytherin edition is also there! Decor features yet another Loki print ❤ and a Godsgrave card.

Shelf 8: Random & self-help?

rando

This is probably my least favourite shelf it contains many random books I have been gifted or brought on a whim. Also here is a really cool postcard I picked up and the bookends I have had since I was a baby! And that’s a wrap! Let's Chat!

Do you see any of your favourites? How do you organise your shelves? Have you done a bookcase tour? Let me know below! Much Love,

R.I.P it or SHIP it?? Book characters

rip it or ship it

Hello Blogging world! I am back! From my unannounced, unexplained, unplanned and way longer than expected hiatus. And what better way to jump back into things than a light hearted quick fun tag.

The R.I.P it or ship it tag I believe was originally created by the ever amazing Emma from Emma books on Youtube.  For those of you who may not know, the way this tag works is simple. You write down an even number of character names on separate bits of paper. Whether it be book, TV or Movie characters. You then fold these papers up and mix them together. Then essentially you pick two of the papers out at a time. And the fun is in your reactions and deciding if you would either ship those two characters or R.I.P it, as in that ship is dead!

This time around I will be using all Book characters. I only chose 10 characters (five pairs) so that this post will hopefully not become a billion years long. Then again who knows I might have a LOT to say about some of the matches! haha. Anyways let’s jump right in!

divider 1

Match 1: Thomas Cresswell & Feyre Archeron

Ok so I love both Thomas and Feyre and I love them with their OTP’s. However I think maybe this could kind of work? They are both Tough Adventurous people who want to do good and are fiercely loyal to those they care about. And although Thomas is very deductive and brain smarts I think Feyre and her sharp tongue could more than keep up. I think the main thing that makes me think these two could kind of work is the fact that they both believe and know that no one but their equal, and someone who will treat them as such and even challenge them, will do. However while death is Thomas’s calling, even though Feyre could more than hold her own I think she’s seen enough for her life time.

Verdict: SHIP it

Note: Thomas Cresswell is from the Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco. And Feyre is from the ACOTAR series by Sarah J Maas. divider 1

Match 2: Audrey Rose Wadsworth & Cather

Oh wow ok haha I think this one is going to be a no. I think maybe they could possibly be friends as Audrey rose is capable of being nice and polite and also fiercely loyal. I think Audrey also craves good female friendships. I think if Audrey kept trying long enough that Cath would also accept her as a friend despite sometimes preferring to keep to herself. As for a couple I do not think they would work at all. I do not think Cath would be anywhere as near adventurous enough for Audrey and I think Audrey’s profession would not be up Cath’s ally at all. Bottom line Audrey needs an equal and I just don’t think Cath could be that.

Verdict: R.I.P it

Note: Audrey Rose Wadsworth is from the Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco. And Cather is from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. divider 1

Match 3: Rhysand & Tamika Mia Corvere

HAHA ok sorry not sorry but I had to. I mean come on its Rhysand and wouldn’t that be amazing I would ship that for sure 😉 he is for sure my book boyfriend of choice and I think he is amazing and you will not convince me otherwise. But back to the actual potential match Rhys and Mia. I find this Match so interesting although I should mention I have not read Godsgrave yet so am not sure how Mia’s character developed there so this is based on Nevernight Mia. I think these two could Wreak havoc together. They both have sharp tongues so there would never be a dull conversation. I think Mia and Amren might get along a little too well and blood would run in the streets whenever they willed it. So I think although Rhys’s dark side would get along well with Mia and if that was all of his character they would make a great match for each other. But I also think Mia is too focused on vengeance possibly to appeal to Rhysand’s many other personality traits.

Verdict: Mostly R.I.P it but a little ship it

Note: Rhysand is from the ACOTAR series by Sarah J Maas and Mia Corvere is from the Nevernight series by Jay Kristoff. divider 1

Match 4: Manon & Levi

HAHAHAH! Just Nope! Good, sweet, Funny Levi does not stand a chance. Manon would take one look at him and eat him whole with a smile on her face. Levi needs someone he can use his country boy charm on. Someone he can look after and just chill with. Manon does not need no one to look after her. She is a bad-ass lady and I do not think she has just chilled a day in her life. She was made for adventure to feel the wind on her face. Quite frankly Manon deserves nothing less than her equal someone who can take in all that she is, the 13 and their rides and no bulk and what they see. Manon’s got too much growing to do to settle with Levi. Sorry not sorry.

Verdict: a big fat R.I.P

Note: Manon is from the TOG series by Sarah J Maas and Levi is from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. divider 1

Match 5: Jem Carstairs & The Darkling

Well well wouldn’t these two be a true pairing of light and dark. I don’t think this would work at all. The Darkling would be too consumed with darkness and trying to rule the world where as Jem is dedicated to saving it. Plus Jem already has one dark and brooding man in his life and I don’t think Will would be too fond of The Darkling. In fact it’s highly likely Jem and Will would be sent to kill The Darkling no questions asked. And as much as I really love The Darkling I don’t think he would stand a chance!

Verdict: R.I.P it!!

Note: Jem is from The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare and The Darkling is from The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo. divider 1

Well that was not a very successful round of matches! I think Manon and Levi were the most entertaining match of the bunch! Hopefully cupid will have better luck next time HAHA
Let's Chat!

What do you think of these matches? Do you agree with my verdicts or would you have said differently? Did you enjoy this post? Should I do more of them down the track? Let me know below!

The Mystery Blogger Award

mystery.PNGHi guys! Today I thought I would finally get around to doing one of the tags/ awards I have been tagged in. I really am so far behind on these and bookstagram ones so apologies to anyone who has nominated/ tagged me in anything I am actual horrible at following them all up! But I am determined to turn things around!

Starting with the Mystery Blogger Award. This Award was created by Okoto Enigma and I was tagged by the always lovely Darque Dreamer. Thank you!! Seriously guys if you haven’t checked out her blog already, do so! She is so lovely and supportive of other bloggers!

The Rules:

  • Put the award logo/image on your blog.
  • List the rules.
  • Thank whoever nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well.
  • Tell your readers 3 things about yourself.
  • You have to nominate 10 – 20 people.
  • Notify your nominees by commenting on their blog.
  • Ask your nominees any 5 questions of your choice; with one weird or funny question (specify).
  • Share a link to your best post(s).

divider 1

Three things about me:

  • My favourite animal is a tiger.
  • I don’t like coffee!!
  • I am a proud Slytherin, but am yet to read all the HP books :O I really do need to get around to finishing them they are so good! But I have been putting it off due to a certain death I know about thanks to the movies.

divider 1

Darque Dreamer’s Questions:

What is one thing about you that people don’t believe?

Ummm I don’t know?? I haven’t really done anything unbelievable like go on some magical quest or anything. HAHA. But maybe I feel some people don’t believe how old I am or think I am younger then I am?? I dunno I have a baby face and love Disney and am forever a child at heart! The adult world can take a hike!!

What book would you love to live in?

This is a tricky one! There are so many good places! Like I Would like to visit Prythian like after ACOWAR and everything has settled down. I would love to live in Six of Crows so I could go on an insane adventure with Kaz and the gang. But I would also love to live in the HP books so I could learn magic and go to Hogwarts!

What time period would you love to travel to?

This one is easy for me! I have always had an obsession with the 1920’s I love all the glitz and glam. The fashions! Those flapper dresses! And the way men dressed back then! Plus the music and the dancing! It just seems like such a great time! I mean despite the great depression and all that Jazz.

What book genre would you consider reading a book from without knowing the synopsis or title?

I guess for me it would have to be a fantasy book. It would have to be my favourite genre so likely the safest bet to me liking a book without having seen anything else about it! But let’s be real I would never do this by choice! HAHA! Who would? I want to read books I like and it is very hard for me to finish a book if I just am not into it!

If you could buy one book for everyone to read, what would it be?

This is another tricky one! And I wish I had an answer that was more grown up, deep and meaningful. But I think I am just going to have to go with a book that surprised me as the writing style, context, characters and story are not like what I usually read! But this book fast became one of my favourites and still is. So I am going to have to go for Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. If only to spread the love and badass vibes around for this book! Seriously if you have not read this book please give it a chance!

My Questions:

  • What is a book that almost everyone seems to love but you hated?
  • What is your Hogwarts house and do you think this fits you/ wish it was different?
  • If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
  • Favourite read for 2017 so far?
  • What is your favourite snack food to eat while reading or just because??

divider 1

So I hate talking myself up but the post that I think is my best or that I am just generally happy with how it turned out and was received is my review of Six of Crows. I just really liked this book and am happy with how the review turned out and the thoughts I was able to express.

divider 1

I Nominate:

Now being quite new to the blogging world I don’t know many of you yet so if you do not do tags/ awards or have already completed this one than apologies! But if not I can’t wait to see your answers! Also feel free to participate even if you are not tagged because this one was fun!

Brooklyn / Laura / Charlotte / Rebecca / Steph / The Orangutan Librarian / Amber / Sydney / Nadwa / Celeste

Let's Chat! This was fun and I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit more about me! Do you participate in tags or awards? Let me know what some of your answers would have been in the comments below! Until next time happy watching and reading.

Review: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

SOCTitle: Six of Crows

Author: Leigh Bardugo

Publisher: Indigo

Published: 2015

Rating: 5/5

Review2This book! Where do I even begin??!! I absolutely loved it! And I apologize in advance if this review is mostly fangirling and rambling! So I read this for the first time a couple of weeks ago now. And I still LOVE it! All I wanted to do was dive straight into Crooked Kingdom but unfortunately I am yet to get a copy 😦

I have previously read the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo and I really liked that story as well especially some of the characters (I am looking at you Darkling). But let me tell you Six of Crows knocked those books out! Like just so much more fast paced and badass action and not one boring annoying main character for me (I am looking at you Mal). In SOC it just seems like Bardugo has improved her whole writing style. Which is to be expected the more work and author creates and publishes at least that’s the way you would hope it would go.

Six of Crows is a story of six young criminals from a gang known as the Dregs who’s symbol is a crow drinking from a nearly empty cup. Get it Six of Crows?? HAHA anyways moving on. These criminals each have their own back story and special skill set. And they are all brought together to pull of an impossible task.

As I mentioned above I read the Grisha Trilogy before I read SOC. Although I love SOC way more I am glad that I read these books in order of publication. Because I feel I wouldn’t have been able to keep up with the fast paced action of this book had I not already read about the different levels and types of Grisha in the original story. This is because these things are not explained in as much detail in this book, which effectively is what allows the story to be more fast paced then the trilogy. I am also glad that I read the trilogy first as I picked up on the returning characters and Easter eggs about Ravka and the civil war.

Although the characters in the book go through so much and there is so much action, and despite their great success. I did not find the story too unbelievable. In fact the way in which they pull most of the tasks etc off is quite believable and in my opinion ingenious! I loved seeing the plans unfold and being surprised again and again of the mind of Kaz Brekker! Not to mention the amount of twists, turns and heart stopping moments Bardugo manages to place in this book! I was on the edge of my seat nearly the whole time!

I loved the way the Grisha world was developed more and I just generally loved the world and character building in this book! None of the characters are perfect and the way Bardugo allowed us to meet each character and learn of their backstories while still seeing them develop in the present was great! Seriously though Leigh Bardugo is the Queen of multi-layered and morally grey characters! It was fantastic that not one of these characters were perfect. They each had their demons, vices, weaknesses and down fallings. But they all own it beautifully and don’t let it stop them from doing what they got to do! So bad ass on so many levels!! And although I love them all I think Nina, Inej and Kaz have to be my favourites. But if I had to choose just one let’s be honest it would be Kaz dirty hands Brekker!! I mean how could he not be? Despite the fact that you know he would be an incredibly handsome human being. He has been through so much and although his morals can be questionable he won’t let anything get in his way of getting what he wants. Which is good to know after that ending! Guy’s that ending! Killed me! I am dead! What a cliff hanger!! So many possibilities! I NEED the next book now BRING IT TO ME!!

Overall a great story with great characters and world building. Really stepped up the game from the Grisha trilogy. Despite being fantasy a believable badass story that kept me on the edge of my seat constantly wanting more. I can’t wait to get my dirty little hands on Crooked Kingdom! (See what I did there HAHA). And that is exactly why I gave this book a 5/5 rating. If you haven’t already and are late to the party like me, go and read this book now! I doubt you will regret it! Let's Chat!

Have you read this book? Did you like it better or worse than the Grisha Trilogy? Who is your favourite Dregs member? Was the story believable for you? Please no Crooked Kingdom spoilers!!! But let me know your SOC thoughts in the comments below. Until next time happy watching a reading!!

Review: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

Title: Norse Mythology

Author: Neil Gaiman

Published: February 1st 2017

Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing

Rating: 4/5

Review2I will begin with my non spoiler review of this book before heading into what could be considered as SPOILERS!! *Gasp* but don’t worry these sections will always be clearly labelled beforehand so you can skip on out before that if you have not read this book!

Much as the title and cover suggest Norse Mythology is a collection of short stories about Norse myths and the Norse gods. Such as Odin, Thor and Loki. I am a big fan of Norse mythology and the Norse gods. In fact whenever I watch or read something about them I am ready to pack my bags and go back to university to study them more in depth! I just find them fascinating and have a Loki obsession. But don’t worry it generally passes once I move away from the book or show!

Anyways lets’ get back on track. The stories in this book are Gaiman’s retellings/portrayals of popular and lesser known Norse myths, legends and stories. Covering from the beginning/ creating of the world all the way to Ragnarok. I believe this is more of a collection of short stories that make up a book. As the book itself is divided into sections, those sections each being an individual story with different gods, characters and settings.

The book being divided into short stories is pretty much the only reason I have given Norse Mythology a 4 instead of a 5 star rating. I have read very few other books in this format and generally don’t tend to pick up and read short story collections. I am not 100% sure why, only that in the past I just haven’t. I think because I was not use to this format the book itself was a lot harder for me to get into. As I would be really into a story and the gods and characters present and interacting in it. Only for that story to come to an end and to have to try to dive into a new story with possibly different characters and settings. So I would mostly end up reading one of the stories and then putting the book down until another time.

However that was really the only thing that bothered me about this book. Apart from my personal reading style causing me to struggle to read this book like I normally would, I think Neil Gaiman has done a beautiful job writing these myths in his own way. Although I struggled to read the individual stories back to back. I loved and enjoyed almost every single one of them on their own. And together learning more about the gods and Norse mythology as a whole. I would have to say that my favourite story would have to be really any that featured Loki or revolved mostly around Loki. I just have a weak spot for the God of mischief. I also think that the cover of the book is stunning the little header artworks are beautiful and the writing utterly enjoyable. Which is why I still gave this book 4/5 despite finding it difficult to get into.

This next little bit could be considered as spoilers for the last story in the book Ragnarok. It is not very spoilery but just so as not to upset anyone I thought I would warn in advance. So read at your own risk or skip down to the sign off.

I just want to talk about the last story in the book which is titled Ragnarok. Now I knew going into it that Ragnarok is the Norse version of Dooms Day/ The Reckoning/ END OF THE WORLD. Gaiman also hints all the way throughout the book leading up to this story about all the players who will be present in this last battle/ event. Despite all this I was still shocked at how it all went down and at just how many people/ gods/ characters died. I mean looking back that was probably a stupid thing of me to think, that more would make it through, I mean Hello! Ragnarok literally is the end of the world. What else did I expect? However I think this story was one of my very favourites from the book. I just loved how it shocked and surprised me and brought back and tied together everything from the other stories. How heaps of little decisions and actions taken in the earlier stories lead up to and culminated in this big battle. Just think that if only one of them had done one thing differently this may have all been avoided or had a different outcome. It was just crazy to read and think about! I was also a little bit disappointed in my little Loki’s involvement in this end game, but also really felt he was justified in a lot of ways to feel the way he did despite getting himself in the situation he did. Anyway like I said above this was overall a really good and really enjoyable read well worth 4/5 stars!

Let's Chat!Have you read this Book? Do you agree with my opinions or did you feel another way? Who is your favourite Norse God? Have you read any of Neil Gaiman’s other works or is this your first like me? Let me know in the comments below! Until next time happy watching and reading.

But long story short pretty much all you have to do are answer the below three questions and leave a link to your post in the comments of Sam’s blog. I think this is a really fun way to keep track of what I am reading while also keeping you all up to date on my current reads and what I hope to read as well as some thoughts and opinions before my full reviews.

The three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?WreathCurrently Reading: Recently I have been reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. Currently I am about half way through and am absolutely loving it! I hope to finish SOCit this week sometime and will have a review some time shortly after that for a Review Friday.  But here are some of my current thoughts on this book so far:
  • Leigh Bardugo is a queen
  • I have fallen in love with the Grisha world all over again!
  • The character building and world building are fabulous!
  • Kaz and Inej are my favourites. They are life and I cannot wait to find out more about them!

To sum up I am really loving reading Six of Crows for the first time and being back in the Grisha World. The plot so far is great there are barley any slow moments and I can not wait to see how everything plays out! Foliage 17Recently Finished: If you read my last WWW Wednesday post you will know that the last book I was reading and have since finished is Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I norseoverall really enjoyed this book and my review will be up on Friday for Review Friday. However here are a sneak peak of my thoughts:

  • The cover is 100% amazingly beautiful!
  • I love Norse Mythology
  • Loki is everything and I loved learning more about him.
  • The way the book is set out is different to what I am used to/ normally read. Thus it was slightly harder to get into.
  • well written and entertaining

Keep an eye out for my review going up this Friday if you want to know my more in depth thoughts and reasons behind the points I have made today. Overall though a quite enjoyable read!Foliage 17Up Next: Again if you read my last WWW post I bet it came as a big shock to you that I went on to read Six of Crows as my next read instead of rereading the ACOTAR series! I did say that I might surprise you and it turns out I could not resist the pull of SOC. Having ACOMAF.jpgsaid this however I still really want to reread the ACOTAR series especially ACOMAF!!! That book is still my favourite of the series! ALL THE FEELS EVERY TIME!!

So I think I will definitely be rereading this series soon! It is one of my all-time favourites. However there are so many new great books coming out next month that I have pre-ordered or want to get. So I want to reread those series in preparation for reading them when I recive them! *cough* Godsgrave *cough* so keen!! There are also still multiple books on my shelves that I have brought and am yet to read. So the issue is always weather to reread or read new stuff!! HELP ME I don’t know what to do!!

If I again manage to put off my re-read of ACOTAR, I will most likely read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon next. I brought the first four books in this series in a box set from Bookdepository andoutlander.jpg only just received them on Monday.  Such good timing with the delivery though as I only just finished watching season 2 of the TV show this Sunday just gone! I absolutely adore the TV show!! My Nanna is from Scotland and I have always had an obsession with Scotland and Scottish things. The Kilts, Bag pipes and accents ARE KILLING ME!! But in a very good way I just can’t get enough of it!!

So I really want to get stuck into reading the books that started it all! I hope they are great and that they are even more detailed than the show because I need to know what happens! I need more Clare and Jamie in my life. JAMIE!!!! I can’t even! Basically I need something to help keep me going until season 3 of the TV show comes out in September sometime!

So that is my weekly update on everything I have been reading and want to read. What do you guys think I should read next? What is everyone else reading? Until next time happy watching and reading!

WWW Wednesday, 23-Aug-2017

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words. To participate and see others responses check out her blog by clicking here.

This is my first ever WWW Wednesday! I wanted to participate as a way to offer you guys more regular content as well as keep you up to date on what I am reading these days. So here we go.

The three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading: So for the past couple of weeks I have been reading Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. I have made big progress on this book and actually only have 2 or 3 of the individual stories left to read before I finish it. I do plan to write a review on this book when I finish it just like I want to try and do with every book I read. However here are a few of my current thoughts:

  • I love Norse Mythology in general so learning more about it through Gaiman’s portrayal has been great fun.
  • I love Loki he is amazingly awesome! (And misguided.)
  • That cover is beyond beautiful I mean look at it!
  • Overall really enjoying this read however the way it is set out is annoying me and making it hard to get through.

I hope to be finished this read by the end of this week and hopefully can have my full review up by the end of next week to give you all my thoughts and final opinion.

Recently Finished: The book I finished before starting Norse Mythology was actually a collection of poetry called Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. I smashed this out in less than one day! It is very easy to read and well set out. I am hoping to have the review with my in depth thoughts and feelings up by the end of this week. But again here are a few quick points:

  • I love the simplistic beauty of this cover (those bees are so cute!)
  • This is a very quick and easy read.
  • I found a lot of the content hard to relate to.
  • However all of the writing is beautiful and some poems made me stop and think and just wow.

So to sum up this is a quick and easy read but not all of it related to me. Keep an eye out for my review!

Next up:  Now this section is a little trickier for me at the moment I am having such mixed feelings about what to read next! Firstly with the release of the synopsis for the new novella/ short story and many bookstagramers talking about it at the moment. I have a strong urge to re-read the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. Like I can hear the books from here screaming at me to take them off my bookshelf and read them right this instant! haha but seriously I love this series and will happily re-read it for what will be the third time. I mean the plot the characters oh the characters! My babies! Feysand is like my biggest OTP and one can never get enough Rhysand in your life! He is the ultimate of book boyfriends! I don’t care what anyone says fight me on this!

On the other hand though I have many books on my bookshelf that I am yet to read as well as more that should arrive any day now from Book Depository. These include the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and the Assassins Blade by Sarah J. Maas.  I am loving the Outlander TV show at the moment so I am excited to delve into the books that started it all. Also I only read the Grisha trilogy for the first time last month and loved it so really want to read Six of Crows. Altogether though I have many great reads lined up! I have a feeling ACOTAR will win but hey I tend to read whatever I am in the mood for at that time, so I may surprise you!

Have you read any of these great books? What are you currently reading and plan to read next? What do you think I should read next? Let me know in the comments below! Until next time happy reading and watching.

ONCE UPON A TIME: My thoughts so far

once-upon-a-time

Title: Once upon a time

Creators: Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis

Spoiler Alert: Just a warning that there is very likely to be spoilers in this post due to the fact that I am just so excited and angry about certain things I can not express myself without them. So if you’re like me and hate spoilers do not read this post, yet, if you haven’t seen seasons 1-3.

So I know that this show has been around for a while now but for a number of reasons I had just never made the decision to watch it until recently. However now I wish I would have watched it much sooner! This show Oh my gosh! Let me tell you I am now a big fan and absolutely love everything this show brings to television.

For those of you that don’t know Once Upon a Time is a show that fits into the genres of fantasy, action and romance. The show is mostly set in a small town called Storybrooke as well as the enchanted forest. The show is Centered around Emma Swan: “the product of true love” and in this case the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. In what is in my opinion creative genius that must take weeks of planning and creating this show portrays old school fairytales, nursery stories and Disney tales in a modern day setting and manages to intertwine them all together.

The fact that the show is centered around magic and fairytales is just one of the reasons I love this show! I also love the elaborate out of this world costumes, the plot twists, the great acting (In terms of TV shows) and many of the characters (others I just love to hate). I am going to take this moment to share with you guys some of my favorite characters from the show and I can’t start with any other one than Hook. Where do I even start? Killian Jones (Hook) is a sexy beast, pirate, funny, ladies man with a bigger heart than you would first think. Not to mention the way he falls for Emma and has her back is the best thing and had me swooning. Not to mention when him and Emma actually finally get together I was literally squealing like a school girl! I mean seriously it took Emma long enough! Which brings me to my second favorite: Emma Swan, although she frustrates me immensely sometimes, her large heart, bravery and wit by far make up for it and you can’t help but love her character. Lastly one that was a bit unexpected for me and I am still not 100% sure why I like him so much myself is Rumplestiltskin. I mean yes he has done horrible things and still continues to do so, but he has also done heartwarmingly great things for the people he loves, and I think it might mostly be the fact that Robert Carlyle is just brilliant in the role I mean seriously he is great! There are so many other great characters and things about this show but if I sat here and wrote about them all this would be the longest post in history and not to mention I don’t want to spoil everything, just in case you ignored my spoiler warning.

As I think I’ve made very clear, I love this show and am pretty much addicted. Because of this however I am left quite angry. Why you ask? Well I had finished season three which is when Emma and Hook finally get together (Squeal!!), and so obviously wanted to go straight on to season four to see how their relationship grows as well as how the rest of the plot carries on. So I went and looked online for places where I could buy season four on DVD near my home only to discover that it was not available in Australia. Ok no big deal, no need to freak out yet, surely the release date is soon right?! So I go on to look that up only to discover that it isn’t anytime soon and that it is only currently airing on Australian TV now! So now you are probably thinking why don’t you just watch it now then, as it airs?  Which was exactly my thought process at the time, however they are already about halfway through the season and therefore there is no way for me to watch the episodes I have missed without using illegal means (which I know some people are ok with but I don’t like doing especially to shows I love). So now I am left to wait for the DVD to be released in Australia so I can catch up on my addiction. I really hope the wait goes quick so I can stop being sulky and frustrated. Not to mention I miss Hook already!!

Have you guys had the pleasure of watching this show? Who are your favorite characters? Do you have to deal with the delayed airing to? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you!
